Getting-to-Know-You Activity
As we have discussed in class, it is essential for a teacher to create a classroom environment that is welcoming and safe. With this in mind, you were asked to come up with a getting-to-know-you activity for your middle school rotation. Please describe your plans and tell how you feel it will help both you and the students feel more comfortable.

For the middle school rotation my getting to know you activity is that each student has to count the letters in their first name and how many they have thats how many facts they have to tell me about themselves. So first they will tell me their names and for example Bethany I will then have to tell seven facts about myself. It will help me first learn their names and second learn a few things abou them. Doing this activitiy I believe it will make everyone feel more comfortable because we are learning a lot of facts about one another and learn everyones names.
For my getting to know you activity, I have two different ideas. I will determine which I choose based on what grade level I will be working with. If I have a younger class I will do a web activity where a student has a ball of yarn, and tells a fact about themselves. Then they hold on to the end of the string and toss the ball to someone else to hear a fact about them. Then the class ends up tangled like a web. If the students are older, I will do the line activity you did with us on a visit day. The students will stand on a line. I will ask a question and the students will step on one side or the other depending on their answer.
For my getting-to-know-you activity in my middle school rotation I am doing an activity that includes m&ms or skittles. The students will take a couple pieces of the candy and depending on the color of the candy they will have to tell a fact about themselves. Every color will mean something different like for example red will be what they are afraid of and blue will be what they like to do in their free time. Or I might preselect the candy and put them into a cup. So everyone has the same amount and the same amount of colors. Hopefully the students will enjoy the activity I much as I will so we can get to know each other. :)
For my getting-to-know you activity, I will be doing a detective activity. Students will be completing a survey and will not be writing their names on the assignment. Students will then hand in the surveys and they will be redistributed randomly. Students will then have to try to find who the owner of the paper is. This will allow them to get to better know each other, and it will me to get to better know them.
For my getting-to-know-you activity, I bought a beach ball and I am going to write different things on the beach ball. Some of the things I am going to write on the ball are family, pets, favorite color, favorite book, etc. We will toss the ball around the room and where ever their index finger lands is what they will say about themselves. I feel it will benefit both myself and the students because we will have a fun and easy way to get to know each other.
My getting-to-know you activity for the middle school rotation is a moving around activity. I am going to make three signs that will say agree, disagree, and not sure. Then I will ask them different questions about random things. They will walk to whatever their answers are. During the activity my mentor teacher and I will be participating in the activity too. It will be interesting to see all the different answers and I think it will be a good idea to get all of the students up and moving.
For my getting-to-know you activity, I will be using the toilet paper activity. How this activity works is they will take as much toilet paper as they would use if they go to the restroom. Then for every individual sheet they have to name one thing about themselves that they like to do, family members anything that they want to share.
For my getting to know you game, I will be having the students play a game called who done it. In this game the students are to get in a circle and have an index card and a pencil in front of them. On the index card the students are to write 3 to 5 interesting things they have done. Once they have done that the students pass the index cards to me and I will distribute them back out to a different person. Then, in order the students read the card they have a have to guess who they think wrote that card they get 2 guess's until their turn is over.
I want to have the kids sit in a circle and they will go around the whole circle and tell me their names and what their favorite color is. when I get their favorite color I will take all their favorite colors and I will make a question for their colors. They will answer the question about maybe red will be do u like video games or going outside and playing? It will allow me to get to know them and their personalities a little better
For my getting to know you activity I am making a newsletter template and each section will be a different question to ask them. Ex. First section is Who is your hero. Second Section is the basics: name, favorite color etc. I will get to know a lot about each of the students and have some interesting answers to read.
My activity I chose to do was, the students will think in their head what animal describes them most and why. Then I will go around the room and ask each student to tell us what he or she thought. The last part is going to be a game where you say 3 truths and 1 lie; I will start it off then let the students take turns. This will go on as long as the teacher allows. I thought these activities would get the students involved and open them up to having me in the classroom and get based any barriers they might create
My middle school activity is using each students first name. They will use each letter of their name and describe themselves. So if their name is Tom they will write T and them describe themselves using T. This will let me know what each student is like.
My Getting-to-Know-You activity is called "Two Truths, One Lie." I will do mine first as an example for the students. I'll say something like, "I have two dogs. I'm six feet tall. I drive a silver car. Which one is the lie?" Then the students figure it out. I'll have the students go around the room and do this. I think it will let the students lighten up a little bit. Some students might use humor in their's. So, I think it will be fun.
